The ancient theatre of Larissa was built in the early of 3rd century B.C. during the reign og Antigonos Gonatas, King of Macedonia. The monument is a typical Greek theatre of Hellenistic times.

Larissa was
the headquarters of Hursid Pasha during the Greek War of Independence. In 1881, the
city, along with the rest of Thessaly, was incorporated into the Kingdom
of Greece.
Larisa in old times
Mythology
The city is said in Greek mythology to have been founded By Acrisious, who was killed accidentally by his son, Perseus. There lived Peleus, the hero beloved by the gods and his son Achilles. However, the city is not mentioned by Homer,unless it should be identified with Agrissa of the Iliad. In mythology, the nymph Larissa, was a daughter of the primordial man Pelasgus.
